ORGANISERS hope next year’s Ledge to Lancelin windsurfing marathon will set a world record.
The event is part of a three day windsurfing regatta, the Lancelin Ocean Classic, organized by the Lancelin Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The Ledge to Lancelin marathon has been run for the past 22 years and next year’s event is registered to be acknowledged by Guinness World Records in several categories, including most competitors in an open water marathon.
To achieve this record and ensure that it stands for some time, the committee need to have as many competitors as possible.
They are calling on windsurfers who are up for the challenge, as well as any past competitors, to come along to help us set this record.
If you think you are too old, they have also registered to set a record for the most masters/veterans in an open water race.
The classic comprises waves and slalom events as well as the Ledge to Lancelin marathon.
Next year the event will run from January 10 to 13 and will include a junior promotion on the Sunday which is sponsored by Healthways to offer children up to the age of 12 years free introductory windsurfing lessons.
These lessons will be held in the safety of Lancelin Bay and will be conducted by someone who has had many years in the industry and has taught children the sport, both here and in the United Kingdom.
The three day event culminates in an after party at the Endeavour Tavern, Lancelin, with presentations for the winners, DJ, fireworks and live band.
