No school, no pool policy

30/10/2008 2:10:00 PM
THE Shire of Moora Council passed a new pool policy last week that takes a strong stance on truancy and anti-social behaviour.

The policy, which is effective immediately, is the result of a community consultation process carried out by the Shire of Moora and the Moora Crime and Safety Committee over the past six months.

Shire chief executive officer Lynnette O’Reilly said, “The Moora pool is a fantastic facility for all of the community to enjoy.

“The new set of rules ensures that the pool remains a safe and fun facility while supporting parents and teachers to keep our kids in school.”

The policy focuses on the ‘no school no pool’ principle, which has been successfully adopted by many regional WA communities including Meekatharra and Newman, and has been effective in decreasing truancy and improving pool behaviour.

Shire manager for community services Mike Prunster said, “Each community’s ‘no school no pool’ rules are unique.

“Moora’s ‘no pool no school’ rule focuses on restricting pool access to school age children during school hours, whereas, other communities have taken it a step further and use the pool as a reward for going to school.”

The pool rules below are effective immediately and signage will be erected outside of the pool in the coming weeks. For more information contact Mike Prunster at the shire on 9651 1401.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
